In 2010, two years after the auto industry’s recession, the unemployment rate in Detroit reached a staggering 24.9%. At the time one major industry was facing survival, others were taking a bet on technology and innovation as the future of Detroit’s economy. 

It’s no surprise that the new year didn’t bring an instant stop to layoffs.  According to Layoffs.fyi there’s already been 170+ tech companies that have laid off over 56,000 employees. Also according to layoffs.fyi, only about 800 of those 56,000+ laid off were at Midwest-based companies.  That’s only 1.43%.

Happy new year! January is usually one of the best times to find a new job as companies unlock new hiring budgets and the lull from the holidays is over. The majority of these layoffs are happening at Big Tech companies — yes, “Big Tech.” Startups (though they did also see the worst reductions in November) are in fact different from Big Tech.

Ann Arbor startup Workit Health, the nation's leading provider of virtual substance use disorder treatment, has just announced a $118 million Series C funding round to bring substance abuse treatment to the 9 out of 10 Americans who avoid treatment because of the stigma or lack of affordability of substance abuse programs. This new funding round was led by New York-based global private equity and venture capital firm Insight Partners, with participation from CVS Health Ventures, FirstMark Capital, BCBS
