May is Mental Health Awareness Month, but for those who struggle with mental health issues, finding support is a year-round challenge. 

Okay, so the layoff numbers still look bad. Nearly 170,000 people have been laid off in the tech industry this year. But let’s put things into perspective.  Despite layoffs in the tech sector, job reports indicate that unemployment is relatively low, and overall job growth, while cooling off, remains strong.

From the Great Resignation and “Quiet Quitting” to massive layoffs, it would appear that the power dynamics between employer and employee have shifted once again.

This year has certainly had its share of ups and downs. It’s true that the Midwest isn’t totally immune to the widespread tech layoffs that are happening on the coasts, but overall the Midwest tech community is still going strong. Times might be tough. Our community is tougher. 

With more layoffs happening this month from major tech companies like Stripe, Facebook, Lyft, and GoPuff, it can be easy to be down about the job market. Many startups are bracing for a winter of layoffs, but there are also the companies that have been sustainably growing (unlike the companies that rode the startup wave of 2021 and hired irresponsibly) and they will continue to hire this winter.

Columbus, Ohio has one of the fastest growing startup and tech ecosystems, not just in the Midwest but in the country. Why? Because it’s home to some incredible startup and tech companies. 

Layoffs, hiring freezes, venture capital slow down . . . these are the headlines currently making the news. And yes, there's no doubt all of that is happening right now. But during this uncertain time, there's also quite a bit of growth happening, too.  So we partnered with our friends at PeerSignal to stay on top of everything happening in the tech hiring market right now.

Despite last quarter being the slowest for VC funding since 2020, there’s still significant growth happening in the startup and tech space, especially in the Midwest.  This month already we’ve seen humongous rounds for top Midwest cybersecurity companies like NetSPI and Arctic Wolf, both based in Minneapolis and raised over $400M each. Venture capital funding was at a record high, companies were hiring like mad, and the startup and tech industry was like a rocket ship. 2022 has been a different story. But if you take a step back and look at the last 6 months all together, it might not be what you think.
