It’s no surprise that the new year didn’t bring an instant stop to layoffs.  According to Layoffs.fyi there’s already been 170+ tech companies that have laid off over 56,000 employees. Also according to layoffs.fyi, only about 800 of those 56,000+ laid off were at Midwest-based companies.  That’s only 1.43%. 

Detroit is a rapidly growing tech hub and despite economic layoffs in 2022, the tech industry in the Motor City continues to grow. Detroit was recently ranked the #1 emerging startup ecosystem in the world, and we can see why — it’s full of some of the best startups and tech companies in the region — and the country! 

This time of year we like to take a moment to reflect on giving back to the community. One of the biggest themes of giving back in the startup world is returning the love to the people and the planet that provides support when you’re getting started.   As part of this reflection, we’d like to bring to light a few companies that keep the community and our environment top of mind. 

Detroit is a growing hub for startups and tech companies. From Fortune 500 companies to rising startups, Detroit is also home to some of the best places to work in tech. 

Livegistics founder, Justin Turk, is a third-generation entrepreneur in the construction industry. But instead of jumping right into construction like his family, he took a different path. Justin went to college to become a software developer, then got his Master’s in civil engineering and construction management. With the partnership of his education and familial ties to construction, the foundation for Livegistics was created naturally. 

There’s no doubt a shift is happening in the hiring landscape. Many companies, big and small, have gone from rapidly hiring to cutting teams and reorganizing their labor force. But that’s not the whole story.  Despite the media’s focus on layoffs and hiring freezes, there are still many companies that are hiring. Just in the last couple of weeks, we’ve seen companies continue to hire, raise money and grow.

The Midwest truly has some of the best tech talent in the world. Gone are the days when the middle of the country is overlooked and underrated. Companies are seeing it and they are taking action.
